Mairéad Kathleen Reid
Who Am I?
I’m Mairéad Reid, a Graduate Electrical Project Engineer at Freedom and a graduate from the University of Glasgow with a First-Class Honours degree in MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Music.
My work involves supporting large engineering projects by producing technical reports, calculations, and drawings, and conducting surveys and research. I collaborate with senior engineers, attend meetings, and visit sites, gaining hands-on experience in various technical disciplines.
My journey hasn’t been without challenges; as a woman in engineering, I’ve had to overcome barriers related to underrepresentation. But this has driven me to embrace both the analytical and creative aspects of my career. In five years, I see myself leading major projects and promoting diversity in engineering.

What did I get out of GEEP?
I completed GEEP in 2020. The programme helped me bridge the gap between university and the professional world by offering insights into the diverse opportunities available to engineers. I signed up to expand my network, learn from experts, and gain guidance for my career.
What kept me motivated throughout was the realisation that the field is inclusive and creative. The speed networking session was the most valuable part for me, as it allowed me to connect with established engineers and gain practical advice on transitioning from student to professional life.
What would I say to a student or a recent graduate who is considering joining GEEP?
If you're a student or recent graduate, I’d highly recommend joining GEEP. The programme not only boosts your technical skills but also helps build confidence in navigating the engineering industry. The mentorship, workshops, and networking sessions are invaluable, particularly if you're from an underrepresented background.
It’s a supportive and inspiring environment where you can explore career paths, gain insights from industry experts, and see your unique perspective as a strength. Take the leap - it could be the stepping stone that helps shape your career.
