About Proud to be an Engineer
Proud to be an Engineer was intended to showcase diverse stories from engineers from various backgrounds typically underrepresented in the industry with a focus on LGBTQ+ and Disability.
Through this project, the team invited engineers interested in public engagement to undertake public engagement training to develop the skills needed to deliver engaging public engagement activities.
Participating engineers undertook a training programme developed and delivered by staff from the School of Engineering and Materials Science, and the Public Engagement Hub at Queen Mary University of London.
Participants were invited to participate in four in-person training days on campus at the University, and a repeated half-day online training session for each of the four training days.
In addition, mentoring was provided for participants to discuss their public engagement ideas.
At the end of the project participating engineers put their new skills to work at two public engagement events. The first event for year 10 – 12 students from Local Schools in Newham and Tower Hamlets, which was held on Wednesday 26th June at Queen Mary University of London. The second event was a community event held at the RichMix community space in East London on Saturday 6th July.
