Richard Craster is an internationally renowned expert on wave physics in mechanical systems, specifically in acoustic and mechanical metamaterials, guided elastic waves and the mathematics underpinning engineering innovation. Algorithmic advances he pioneered are embedded in software widely used in industry for the non-destructive evaluation of structures and in the defence and nuclear sectors. His research led to two spinout companies, Multiwave A.G., creating portable MRI devices, and Quaisr, which he co-founded, delivering a platform for data-centric engineering. He led nationally on content reviews for mathematics A-levels, which have impacted industry skills and entrants to university engineering.
