Jhuma Sadhukhan is Professor of Engineering and Sustainability at the University of Surrey and a leading specialist in net-zero sustainable circular bioeconomy. Working across sustainability, engineering, AI and global healthcare, she has developed lifecycle assessment, techno-economic analysis, sustainable design and process integration tools used by industries in the UK and internationally. These have supported projects including Flue2Chem, a 15-partner Innovate UK project converting industrial flue gas into surfactants, which won the UK’s Net-Zero Industry Innovation Outstanding Award at COP30.
She is Co-Director of the Global Center for Sustainable Bioproducts and the C-Loop Advanced Manufacturing Hub, and co-leads ELEMENTAL, an engineering biology mission hub focused on recovering critical minerals and rare earths from industrial waste. She also served on the BBSRC Strategic Advisory Panel and her textbook Biorefineries and Chemical Processes is recognised as a key bioeconomy resource. Her community-focused work includes bioenergy systems in Mexico that shaped national biofuels policy, and clean cooking and mini-grid systems in Ghana, Uganda and Ethiopia. She has supervised more than 40 postdoctoral fellows and 25 PhD graduates, trained over 400 professionals, led over 30 industrial projects, and founded the global Institution of Biorefinery Engineers, Scientists and Technologists.
