Dr Pengzhu Wang is a leading expert in the technology of high-performance ropes and cables, essential engineering components in civil and marine engineering, such as mooring tethers for deep-water installations, in mining, and in novel building structures. He has made significant contributions to the R&D and commercialisation of fibre ropes for offshore renewable energy; to the development of hybrid ropes combining a high-performance polymer core with steel outer strands, giving an optimised combination of strength/weight and damage resistance; and to the use of carbon-based nanomaterials for ropes. A 2020 Royal Academy of Engineering Industrial Fellow, his work on rope technology is recognised internationally.
