Dr Nick Johnson is a founding architect of practical small cells in mobile networks. As founder, CTO and VP of Engineering for ip.access Nick created the world's smallest GSM (global system for mobile communications) base station using handset technology. The system's 3G variant yielded a deployment of two million residential units across the US in AT&T's network. He helped build the small cell ecosystem through the conception and initial formulation of the femto application platform interface (FAPI) as chair of the Small Cell Forum's radio and physical layer working group. FAPI has been widely adopted by industry, including Qualcomm, Intel, Radisys, Marvell and Mavenir.
