Dr Arnab Basu is an award-winning physicist, entrepreneur and technology leader who has translated advanced science into commercially successful engineering with global impact. He is the founding CEO of Kromek Group plc, a spinout from Durham University that is at the forefront of radiation and biological threat detection and medical imaging. Under his leadership, Kromek has pioneered the commercialisation and application of cadmium zinc telluride (CZT), an advanced semiconductor material capable of detecting and identifying radiation with exceptional precision. This has helped establish the UK as a global leader in the field, with patented detector technologies now deployed across healthcare, national security, defence and civil nuclear markets. Dr Basu has contributed to the wider UK engineering and innovation ecosystem through senior advisory and non-executive roles, and currently serves on the North East Investment Zone Advisory Board and the Russell Group Industrial Strategy Expert Panel, contributing experience in commercialisation, scale-up, advanced manufacturing and university–industry collaboration. Dr Basu is currently High Sheriff of County Durham, an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Physics, a Fellow of the Institute of Directors and the Royal Society of Arts, and received an Honorary Doctor of Science from Northumbria University.
