Professor Ranjith Pathegama Gamage is a globally recognised leader in sustainable subsurface engineering. His pioneering research has advanced environmentally responsible rock-breaking technologies that significantly improve the efficiency and sustainability of resource recovery. He has also developed transformative methods to convert mining and industrial wastes into high-value materials, contributing directly to emissions reduction and circular economy goals. He has established a major interdisciplinary research centre focused on deep-earth energy and critical mineral recovery, bringing together leading Australian, and overseas institutions and industry partners to develop next-generation extraction technologies. His innovations have influenced practice globally, including projects in geothermal energy, carbon dioxide utilisation, and green mining. As a mentor, he has trained and inspired more than 100 early-career researchers, including award-winning PhD students, many of whom now hold leadership roles in academia and industry.
