Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann has had a transformational impact on biomedical engineering in higher education and STEM education at all levels, both in Ghana and regionally. She founded the first biomedical engineering and orthotics and prosthetics departments in the country, some of the first in Africa. She is now Dean of the University of Ghana’s School of Engineering Sciences. She has hosted the national science and maths quiz competition for 18 years, inspiring tens of thousands of children to pursue STEM education, and changing public perception of STEM through outreach and media promotion.
